Capturing the Magic of a Surprise Proposal in La Jolla California
When I received a message on Instagram asking if I could photograph a surprise proposal in La Jolla, I immediately knew it was going to be a special one.
The groom-to-be had found me through a reel I had recently posted featuring another surprise proposal in San Diego. I always love hearing how clients find me, but there’s something especially sweet about the boyfriend being the one to reach out. Let’s be honest, most guys aren’t typically the ones thinking about hiring a photographer, planning the details, and making sure every moment is documented. The fact that he took the time to do all of that for her made this proposal even more meaningful.
Before our session, we hopped on a call and he filled out my client questionnaire. One of my favorite parts of working with couples is reading their answers. It gives me such a good understanding of who they are, how they met, and what they love most about each other. Some of the things people write about their future spouse are genuinely the sweetest things I’ve ever read. Every time I read those responses, I’m reminded why I love documenting these milestones so much.
Planning the Perfect Surprise Proposal
Because they were traveling to San Diego from out of town, I offered to help scout locations for the proposal. This is something I love doing for my destination clients, especially when they’re planning a surprise proposal in La Jolla. Choosing the perfect location can feel overwhelming when you’re unfamiliar with the area, and I want my clients to feel confident that every detail is taken care of.
A Litte Surprise I Forgot In My Car
I also had a little surprise planned of my own., I’ve been playing with the idea of gifting some of my proposal clients a disposable camera after our session. I love the thought of couples continuing to document their trip together after I leave. In a world where most photos live on our phones, there’s something nostalgic about getting a roll of film developed and holding those memories in your hands years later.
I had picked up a disposable camera for them and tossed it in my car before the session. Then somewhere between the nerves, excitement, and anticipation of the proposal, I completely forgot to give it to them. I didn’t realize it until I was driving home and I was so upset with myself. If you’re reading this, just know that camera was meant for you! Thankfully they still left with a gallery full of memories from their trip, but I think that little disposable camera idea might still make its way into future sessions.
When San Diego Weather Had Other Plans
As the day approached, we were all hoping for one of those iconic golden San Diego sunsets.
Instead, the weather had completely different plans.
The skies were gray, the marine layer rolled in, and the wind was doing its best to remind us that May grey was here. But one thing I’ve learned as a photographer is that beautiful photographs are about so much more than perfect weather.
The photos turned out absolutely gorgeous.
The soft overcast skies created beautiful, moody effect, and the focus stayed exactly where it belonged, on the emotion of the moment. The surprise, the excitement, the happy tears, and the look on her face when she realized what was happening. Those are the things that matter most.
Watching someone ask the love of their life to spend forever with them never gets old.
It’s one of the reasons I love being a San Diego proposal photographer. Every proposal is different, every couple has their own story, and for a few moments I get a front row seat to one of the most important days of their lives.
