A New Home, Taco Bell, and Family Memories
One of my favorite things about documentary family photography is that the best sessions rarely go according to plan. They happen in the middle of real life, and that’s exactly what made this recent family photo session so special.
This sweet family had only been in their new home for two days. The walls were freshly painted, the rooms were empty, and boxes hadn’t even started piling up yet. Instead of waiting until everything was perfectly organized and decorated, they decided to celebrate this new chapter exactly as it was.
A New Home Family Photo Session in San Diego
The original idea for this session was actually a little different.
When I heard they were moving, I suggested doing a farewell session in their old home. As a family photographer, I love documenting the spaces where families create memories. The walls may be ordinary, but the moments that happen inside them are anything but.
Mom immediately laughed and said, “No way. I’m so ready to leave that house behind.”
She shared that the home held a lot of difficult memories, and she was excited for a fresh start. Instead, she suggested we photograph their family in their brand-new home.
The second she said it, it made complete sense.
A new house. A new beginning. A new chapter.
Breaking in a New Home with Taco Bell
Every family has their thing.
For this family, it’s Taco Bell.
What started as a funny joke over the years has become one of their favorite traditions. So when it came time to celebrate their new home, there was really only one way to do it: sitting on the floor together eating Taco Bell in an otherwise empty house.
No dining room table.
No furniture.
No perfectly styled kitchen.
Just a family, some tacos, and the excitement of starting over.
I love photographing. moments like these because they’re real. Years from now, I don’t think they’ll remember what color the walls were or where the furniture ended up. They’ll remember sitting on the floor eating Taco Bell together while imagining everything their future home would become.
Real Life Doesn’t Always Sit Still
Of course, there was one small challenge.
Their three-year-old had absolutely no interest in family photos.
He spent most of the session running upstairs and exploring every corner of his new house.
Instead of fighting it, we embraced it.
We packed up the Taco Bell, followed him upstairs, and let the session unfold naturally. Some of my favorite images came from simply documenting him discovering his new home room by room.
That’s one of the reasons I love lifestyle family photography so much. Kids don’t need to sit still or smile on command. They get to be exactly who they are.
Why Empty Houses Make Great Family Photos
I think a lot of families assume they need a perfectly decorated home before scheduling an in-home family session.
The truth is, empty houses can be magical.
There are no toys to pick up.
No counters to clear.
No pressure to make everything look perfect.
Just beautiful natural light, genuine connection, and a space filled with possibility.
This session was simple, relaxed, and completely stress-free. The mismatched outfits, empty rooms, Taco Bell wrappers, and little boy running wild throughout the house all came together to tell a story that was uniquely theirs.
